Erin Andrews, Haiti, and the Power Of Mass Communications

Every once in a while, as I continue to contemplate ways in which I can succinctly communicate just how powerful mass communications can be in a place like Haiti, a story like this comes along.

While this story is certainly demonstrative of the negative power of mass media, one cannot make the mistake of throwing the baby out with the bath-water. While I cannot even begin to imagine the horror that this woman must be enduring right now, I suspect that she too has become increasingly aware of just how far-reaching mass communications really are.

Stories like this certainly support our commitment to offering ethically-based communication skills to the people of Haiti. As with any tool, there is a right way and a wrong way to use media technology. In the end, the "why" and the "how" mean just as much... and often more... than the "what."
