Quips & Quotes
"Emergencies have always been necessary to progress. It was darkness which produced the lamp. It was fog that produced the compass. It was hunger that drove us to exploration. And it took a depression to teach us the real value of a job."

"It's the same each time with progress. First they ignore you, then they say you're mad, then dangerous, then there's a pause and then you can't find anyone who disagrees with you."

Quips & Quotes
"The big secret in life is that there is no big secret. Whatever your goal, you can get there if you're willing to work."
Oprah Winfrey
Erin Andrews, Haiti, and the Power Of Mass Communications
Every once in a while, as I continue to contemplate ways in which I can succinctly communicate just how powerful mass communications can be in a place like Haiti, a story like this comes along.
While this story is certainly demonstrative of the negative power of mass media, one cannot make the mistake of throwing the baby out with the bath-water. While I cannot even begin to imagine the horror that this woman must be enduring right now, I suspect that she too has become increasingly aware of just how far-reaching mass communications really are.
Stories like this certainly support our commitment to offering ethically-based communication skills to the people of Haiti. As with any tool, there is a right way and a wrong way to use media technology. In the end, the "why" and the "how" mean just as much... and often more... than the "what."
